Launch of the first hackathon: AI for the discovery of new materials
Publié le
On October 17, 2025, PEPR DIADEM launched its first hackathon dedicated to the discovery of materials assisted by artificial intelligence in Grenoble. This event marks the start of the 2025–2026 Challenges, which bring together students, young researchers, and materials science specialists around a common challenge: improving the design of new materials using AI.
An inspiring launch day
The opening day, held at Grenoble Alpes University, brought together 41 participants from six countries (France, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Australia, Egypt, Vietnam, and Poland). Participants attended several stimulating presentations:
- Prof. Marianne Clausel (University of Lorraine): Handling uncertainties in an industrial context? A statistical point of view
- Dr. Leonid Kahle (Materials Design S.A.R.L.): Machine and Human Learning of Materials
- Presentation of the three hackathon challenges, focused on analyzing and improving machine learning models applied to data sets from materials science.

A collective and international challenge
Each team (3 to 4 participants, often from different disciplines and universities) will be asked to propose innovative machine learning methods to solve a specific scientific problem. Participants will receive personalized mentoring, access to real data, and a dedicated collaborative space via Zulip messaging, facilitating exchanges between teams and experts. The hackathon will continue online until January 30, 2026, with a ranking on Kaggle to evaluate the performance of the models.
A formative and collaborative experience
Beyond the competition, the hackathon is intended to be a learning and interdisciplinary collaboration experience, open to anyone interested in learning about AI methods applied to materials. The final results and best contributions will be presented in early 2026.
