Awareness: LCA in the Age of AI: Challenges and Opportunities for Chemistry and Materials

A new event for the DIADEM Academy: an awareness-raising session on an innovative topic aimed primarily at manufacturers “LCA in the Age of AI: Challenges and Opportunities for the Chemical and Materials Industries”.
This event, co-organized with ACD Nouvelle-Aquitaine, provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen ties between the research community and industry. While companies rely on scientific advances to develop new products, improve their processes, and address environmental challenges, research, for its part, benefits from the practical issues encountered in the field.
This ongoing dialogue helps steer scientific work toward real-world needs, while promoting knowledge transfer and the emergence of innovative solutions.
Three presentations to kick off the day
Jannick Duchet-Rumeau (via videoconference) presented the PEPR Recyclage program and the challenges of this national initiative dedicated to developing innovative solutions for materials recycling and the circular economy.
Mario Maglione then presented the PEPR DIADEM, its goal of developing artificial intelligence to support the discovery and design of new materials, as well as the initiatives undertaken in the areas of research and training.
Finally, Elodie Lacassagne presented the ACD Nouvelle-Aquitaine, its missions, and its role in supporting companies in the chemical sector, highlighting the initiatives undertaken to foster collaboration between academic and industrial stakeholders.

Spotlight on this day dedicated to LCA
The diversity of companies that responded to the call for this event, large corporations, startups, and consulting firms, reflects the growing interest in life cycle assessment (LCA) at a time when environmental issues are taking center stage. This diversity of profiles also fostered fruitful discussions, with each participant contributing their perspective, needs, and feedback on integrating LCA into their operations.
After laying the groundwork for life cycle assessment by presenting its fundamental principles, methodology, and scope of application, several ongoing research projects were presented. These concrete examples illustrated the many opportunities offered by integrating artificial intelligence into LCA, whether to automate certain steps, analyze large volumes of data, or improve the quality and speed of analyses.
Leading experts dedicated to knowledge sharing
To lead the day’s proceedings, four speakers with complementary backgrounds shared their expertise. Guido Sonnemann, an international authority in the field of life cycle assessment, and Emmanuel Mignard, a researcher involved in developing new methodological approaches, contributed their scientific perspectives as well as their insights on current LCA challenges. Joining them were Anastasiya Valakhanovich and Kamal Kamali, doctoral students working on these research topics, who presented their work and illustrated, through concrete examples, the opportunities offered by integrating artificial intelligence into life cycle assessment methodologies.
The discussions that took place throughout the day highlighted the importance of strengthening ties between research and industry. A better understanding of each sector’s needs, constraints, and challenges is essential to fostering innovation, accelerating the development of more sustainable practices, and addressing the current challenges facing the fields of chemistry and materials science.
